If You Always Do What You've Always Done, You'll Always Get What You Always Got

Let's face it, we all know what it means to live a healthy lifestyle. Before our doctor or Pinterest tells us how to workout, what to eat, or what not to do, we know. Actually doing it, though, can be the hard part. Especially if you're doing it on your own.

You can find a lot of ideas or programs that promise awesome results in a short period of time, or products that will be like miracle pills and help you shed weight and feel great quickly. But 99% of these things are temporary solutions that net temporary results. The incredible weight loss in just days - water. The increased energy - stimulants. The improved digestion and/or elimination of toxins - laxatives. And what do you learn from these programs or products? Not how to continue or maintain positive changes in the long run, that's for sure.

If you're like me, you'll take a look at the guidelines and think, "No way! That's unreasonable!" I hope you also follow my lead and then say, "Well... I can do anything for just 10 days. Why not?"

It's eye opening. At first, when you start reading labels, you'll get discouraged. Then you'll get frustrated by what is being put out there under the guise of "healthy" options. Then you'll take a long hard look at what you're putting in your body.

"But wait... I've never had a problem with dairy or gluten."

Unless you're feeling like you're at an optimal level of physical health, it stands to reason that there are things you might want to try changing. And if you've read this far, I'm guessing you don't disagree with that. If you keep doing what you're doing, chances are you won't be feeling better any time soon. (Refer back to the title of this post.)

Diary products contain a sugar called lactose. Lactose can only be broken down by the digestive enzyme, lactase. Some people don't produce enough to do the job. In people who do produce lactase, the amount decreases as they age. What happens without lactase? When lactose sits in your digestive tract, not being dissolved by lactase, it becomes a feast for bacteria and yeast. When they start partying in the sugar, your gut suffers. Gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, and pain that ranges from unpleasant to being rushed to the ER. Cheese is life...but life feels better without cheese.

And gluten... Oh, gluten... I loved you so and how did you thank me? By causing my body to wage war on itself. Rude. In individuals with celiac disease, ingestion of gluten (a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye) sparks an autoimmune response where your immune system attacks your small intestine. For those with non-celiac gluten sensitivity, the response *feels* the same, but your immune system isn't involved. Your body just hates the stuff and tries to get rid of it ASAP. If getting rid of it doesn't happen fast enough, you need to deal with the gas, bloating, and pain of undigested gluten sloooooooowly making its way out like a house guest who has overstayed their welcome.

If you have tummy troubles and can't figure out what's bothering you, take a look at what you're eating and drinking and read your labels. Dairy and gluten hide out in more things that you probably realize. There are so many ways that lactose hides on labels. Whey is a common added protein and wheat is a common thickener. I had no idea that the first ingredient in licorice is wheat. Who knew that a prominent ingredient in soy sauce is wheat? Unless otherwise labeled, gravies and cream-based soups (canned and restaurant versions) include dairy and wheat. That's just the beginning. Dairy and wheat are almost as sneaky as sugar.

"I can't start my day without coffee!"

I hear you. I really do. I love coffee. A few years ago, my doctor recommended I avoid it to ease some digestive issues. I hated her for a few days. I learned to accept brown sadness water as the new norm. Believe it or not, things improved. Water is always better. Which bring us to...

"But I hate drinking water!"

This is a common complaint. Typical suggestions are to add fruit or herbs to improve the taste. For some, that's still not good enough. But you need to understand and accept the indisputable fact that your body NEEDS water. If you choose to get your water via soda, juice, tea, sports drinks, or any other beverage, you're not getting proper hydration. Read labels. Even sports drinks have ingredients that are counter-productive to your goals. Most flavored beverages include more sugar than you should have in a day or artificial sweeteners that have a host of their own issues. And let's talk about that...

"No artificial or refined sugars? Do you hate me?"

Did you know that there are well over 50 names for sugar on food labels? We are inundated with sugar in various forms every day. I'm not just talking about the abundance of things like candy and cookies. Sugar hides out in so many things, it's not even funny. It's actually very aggravating. Look at foods that are marketed to kids and things that are "low-fat." They all have added sugar. Some have refined AND artificial sugar in them. I could go on and on about how terribly awful sugar is, but we'll save that for another post. Just take a look at this brief note from Harvard Health Publications:
Overstimulation of sugar receptors from frequent use of these hyper-intense sweeteners may limit tolerance for more complex tastes,” explains Dr. Ludwig. That means people who routinely use artificial sweeteners may start to find less intensely sweet foods, such as fruit, less appealing and unsweet foods, such as vegetables, downright unpalatable.
“Sugar-containing foods in their natural form, whole fruit, for example, tend to be highly nutritious—nutrient-dense, high in fiber, and low in glycemic load. On the other hand, refined, concentrated sugar consumed in large amounts rapidly increases blood glucose and insulin levels, increases triglycerides, inflammatory mediators and oxygen radicals, and with them, the risk for diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other chronic illnesses,” Dr. Ludwig explains.

Take another look at the guidelines up there and ask yourself if 10 days without these problems is too much to ask of yourself.

"I just need a detox/cleanse and I'll be fine."

*facepalm* I detest this argument.
First of all, almost any of the detox/cleanse products out there don't fix anything. If they did, you'd do it once and be good forever. They mask problems. You take the product and have a few bowel movements, believing that all the ick is gone and you're fresh and clean again.
Second, what happens when the cleanse is over? Now that your insides are squeaky clean, how do you maintain this invigorated health? Certainly not by going back to your pre-detox eating habits.
Finally, if you want to help your body get rid of toxins, stop putting toxins into it. (Read that a couple times.) A true detox is switching to clean eating. Purge the crap from your diet and your body will use the fresh water and whole food nutrition to purge the crap from itself. And guess what?! It's sustainable! A lifestyle change nets long-term, maintainable results.
