Homemade Deodorant & Anti-Perspirant

I used to sweat a lot. As far back as high school, I remember struggling with how to hide it. It didn't matter what season or temperature it was. It didn't matter if I was stressed or calm. It didn't matter if I was running around or sitting still. I had to be very careful about what shirts I wore or people might see how bad it was. Sweat became a source of anxiety. It was so bad that as soon as I thought, "I hope I don't sweat through this shirt," I was basically guaranteed to do so.

For years I tried every type of deodorant on the market. I sewed sweat guards into some outfits. I refused to wear solid colors and I usually made sure to have a sweater or jacket with me... just in case.

Then I started hearing about the dangers of anti-perspirant. How could I give it up? If I was already sweating through it, what would I be like without it?

So I decided to try something crazy. You can DIY everything, so why not anti-perspirant?

I found a few recipes online and then tweaked them to make my own. I do not put mine in an old deodorant tube, though you totally could. If my bathroom gets too warm it gets melty and the deodorant container was just messy. I'd recommend less coconut oil if you want to use it that way.

I just mix mine up in a short, wide mouth mason jar with a plastic lid. To put it on I either slide my fingers across it and then rub it on, or if it's a bit hard, I scrape a bit up and rub it between my hands first.

Here's my typical recipe:

  • 4-6 tablespoons coconut oil (I use more in colder months and less in warmer months)
  • 3 tablespoons arrowroot powder or cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons bentonite clay
  • 10-20 drops of essential oil (optional)

(Do NOT use metal when working with bentonite clay. As it removes toxins and impurities, it can take that out of the metal and you don't want to be rubbing that on your body.)

Soften the coconut oil. It doesn't have to be completely melted.
Mix in the other ingredients.

  • Coconut oil is antibacterial and moisturizing.
  • Arrowroot and cornstarch are very absorbent. (I prefer cornstarch, but I'm more likely to have arrowroot on hand.)
  • Baking soda neutralizes odor and balances pH.
  • Bentonite clay wicks away sweat and detoxifies skin.
  • If you'd like to give your deodorant a boost, add some essential oil to the mix. Choose oils by their scent or properties: antibacterial, antifungal, soothing, invigorating, etc. I'm currently enjoying a blend of peppermint, tea tree, pink grapefruit, and sweet orange, all of which are antibacterial and invigorating. If you have irritation under your arms, you might want to try lavender. 

Since I started using this concoction, I don't sweat anywhere near as much as I used to. In fact, I barely ever sweat at all, even in the Utah summer! This recipe has been a god-send to me and I love, love, love it!!!
